LAWRENCE, KS. In a joint release, Morgan Quitno Press announced that it has been acquired by CQ Press, a division of Congressional Quarterly of Washington, DC.  Scott and Kathleen Morgan, editors of Morgan Quitno’s annual state and city statistical reference books and owners of the privately-held company, will continue to edit the publications in collaboration with CQ Press.

“We have been approached by other buyers through the years, but the situation never felt quite right,” said Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno Press. “However, with CQ Press we found a publisher for which we have tremendous respect. Its integrity and dedication to service leave our great customers in excellent hands.”

Perhaps best known to the general public for its annual awards such the Safest and Most Dangerous Cities, Most Livable State and Smartest State, Morgan Quitno Press has developed a world-wide audience for easy-to-use and easy-to-understand statistical reference books and comparisons. The company has earned an excellent reputation among librarians, government officials, members of the media and other researchers as a trusted source of impartial state and city ranking information.

“Statistics make most people’s eyes glaze over,” said Kathleen O’Leary Morgan, co-owner of Morgan Quitno Press. “We have worked hard to take the mystery out of the numbers and make them useful to both decision makers and the people affected by those decisions.”

Morgan Quitno Press (www.morganquitno.com) was founded in 1989 and began publishing in 1990 with the first edition of State Rankings. This annual title was followed by Health Care State Rankings in 1993; Crime State Rankings in 1994; City Crime Rankings in 1995; Education State Rankings in 2002 and State Trends in 2004. Morgan Quitno also publishes 250 state-specific reference books each year.

CQ Press (www.cqpress.com) publishes reference works, textbooks, and online resources about government, politics, and world affairs that seek to educate and inform readers about government and democracy. CQ Press is a division of Congressional Quarterly Inc. (CQ), a private, independent news-gathering and publishing firm based in Washington, DC. CQ’s content is known for its objectivity, breadth and depth of coverage, and high standards of journalistic and editorial excellence. Founded in 1945, CQ is owned by the Times Publishing Company, publisher of the St. Petersburg Times (Florida), a leading independent media company.
